The invention relates to a method for protecting a charging cable (36) of a charging device (1) for charging a driving battery (3) of a vehicle that can be electrically driven (5). In this method, a resistance value is determined that corresponds to the size of the electrical resistance (40) between two contacts (44, 46) of the charging cable (36), wherein the size of the electrical resistance specifies the current-carrying capacity of the charging cable (36).
