PURPOSE: A method for preparing imatinib or salt thereof using novel bicarbonate salt is provided to simply and cheaply obtain the imatinib or salt. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing imatinib or salt thereof comprises: a step of reacting a compound of chemical formula 1 with cyanamide, bicarbonate, or salt thereof to prepare a compound of chemical formula 2; and a step of reacting a compound of chemical formula 2 with a compound of chemical formula 3. The salt is imatinib mesilate. Bicarbonate salt is denoted by chemical formula 2.
