The road heater, primarily for use during hot in-place recycling road repairs, comprises a heater controls that vary the level of infra-red heat emitted by the heater over time. The controls are preferably programmed to implement a heat wave cycle within a heating range and the heater may include a temperature sensor 17 positionable, in use, in proximate the surface 4 to be heated that communicates with the controls to vary heat accordingly. The heat may be varied by controlling the air to gas ratio burnt by the heater or the rate at which the air gas mixture is burnt. The heater preferably comprises a combustion chamber with a burner membrane medium formed from a sintered metal fibre plate, hydraulic height adjustment and a glow plug ignition system. Also claimed is a method of heating an asphalt road surface and a method of repairing an asphalt road surface. |
