A biocompatible putty formulation suitable for insertion within chronic and acute wounds of humans and animals, which comprises a topical antibiotic, a biocompatible humectant, a biocompatible viscosity-building agent, and at least 5% water, by weight. The formulation remains a solid over a temperature range of 20°C to 35°C. Preferably, the antibiotic is silver (II) oxide. The viscosity building agent may comprise at least one of a hydrophilic clay, such as bentonite, flour and a starch; and the humectant may be jojoba oil. The formulation may have a complex modulus that achieves a plateau or a maximum of at least 4.0x104 Pa in a torque sweep of 1.0 Hz; or has a complex modulus that drops sharply, or begins to exhibit non-linear behaviour, at an oscillating stress of at least 800 Pa; or has a storage modulus of at least 1.0x104 Pa; or has a loss modulus of at least 0.4x104 Pa; or has a complex modulus of at least 1.05x104 Pa. |
