The device has a menu system providing a character selection field (ZF) with a structure of character selection elements for character selection of different alphanumeric character sets in a main mode. A subordinate mode is activated when pressing a number key of a remote control sensor for selection and input of characters (Z) assigned to an actuated number key in a parallel operation with the main mode. Menus for the modes automatically adjust the structure of the selection elements and input options of the character selection field to a desired receiver function.
