An animal feed supplement comprises a mixture of a penicillin degradation product inactive with respect to bacteria and containing a penicillin acid, e.g. penicillic, penillic or penilloic acid, a non-toxic salt of such an acid, penillo-aldehyde or penicillamine with an accessory feed containing more than 10 per cent. of protein, e.g. soya bean, cotton seed or lucerne flour, dried blood, fodder yeast or fish meal, or a basic feed, e.g. barley flour. Examples are concerned with: (i) treating 20g. of an unpurified penicillin G at pH10 with sodium hydroxide solution, adjusting to pH6, diluting to 1 litre and mixing with 2 tons of an accessory or basic feed, this supplement being incorporated in calves' daily feed at the rate of 2kg. or more per 200kg. of animal weight (ii) treating 15g. of crude potassium penicillin G at pH12 with potassium hydroxide solution and heating for 5 min. at 90 DEG C., adjusting to pH6, diluting to 1 litre and mixing with 50kg. of fish meal, this supplement being fed to pigs at the rate of 50g. per day (iii) treating a solution of 15g. of crude sodium penicillin G at pH2 with hydrochloric acid for 2 hr., adjusting with sodium hydroxide solution to pH6 and diluting to 10 litres, this supplement being fed to pigs in the basic feed at the rate of 10ml. per pig per day (iv) mixing 20g. of sodium benzyl-D-penicilloate with 2kg. of soya bean flour and 1 ton of barley flour, the mixture forming half the daily ration of calves (v) mixing 25g. of sodium n-heptyl penicilloate, obtained from penicillin K, with 50kg. of soya bean flour, 60kg. of the mixture being incorporated in the daily food ration of pigs and calves (vi) mixing 25g. of sodium phenoxymethyl penicilloate with 100kg. of soya bean flour, 120g. of the mixture being incorporated in the daily food ration of pigs and calves. The penicillin degradation product may be made from a penicillin not only by treatment with alkali or acid, but also by the action of penicillinase or of a copper or zinc salt. The supplement may contain also an antibiotic active with respect to bacteria. |
