In combustion equipment for an engine such as a ram jet engine, a gasturbine jet-propulsion engine or a gasturbine propeller engine through which a continuous stream of combustionsupporting gas, such as air, flows, at least one flame tube is provided within an outer casing, the flame tube being made in the form of a subsonic ram-jet engine having a thickened upstream portion with a rounded leading edge forming a substantially unrestricted inlet opening followed by a flared diffuser portion connected to a thin downstream portion. The flame tube is shaped so that pre-compression of the gaseous stream upstream of the inlet thereof is produced in operation. The cylindrical flame tube 1 in Fig. 1 has a rounded leading edge 1a and fuel is supplied through injectors 2. A flamestabilizing baffle 4 and an igniter are provided. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, the fuel is supplied through injectors 2a and 3 disposed upstream of the flame tube, fuel from the injectors 3 passing over the outside of the flame tube. In Fig. 3 the fuel injectors are shown at 2b and 3, fuel from the injectors 2b entering the flame tube and fuel from the injectors 3 flowing over the outside of the flame tube. Means may be provided to spread the flame, for example, orifices may be provided in the flame tube or the downstream end of the flame tube may be corrugated, or it may be slit longitudinally and the strips between the slits bent alternately inwardly and outwardly. In Fig. 9 two tubes 8 and 9 are disposed coaxially at the downstream end of the flame tube, the core of combustion gases flowing through the tube 8, and combustion gases and air flowing through the annular duct between the tubes 8 and 9. The flame tubes described above are of tubular form, but in further embodiments for example as shown in Fig. 11, the flame tubes 1 are each of annular form, the leading edges 1a being rounded as before. |
