In a belt conveyer for use in quenching furnace ash wherein the belt 12 is caused to pass through a trough containing quenching liquid and to assume a troughed form with its edges contacting the trough walls 24, one or more inlet ports 20 are provided in the base 11 of the trough and are connected with a supply of liquid at a higher pressure than that in the trough, so that liquid flows from the supply into the space below the belt 12 and assists in maintaining a clearance space between the belt and the trough bottom 11. The liquid, e.g. water, is supplied to a number of ports 20 by a tank 21 through pipes 22 and 23,'water being returned to the tank 21 by a pump 33 whose inlet is connected to a strainer unit 36 positioned in a recess 28 in one of the side walls 24 communicating with the space above the belt 12. The inlets 20 are arranged near the middle of the length of the working portion of the belt 12 and rubber or polyvinyl chloride strips 30 and 32 are provided along both trough walls to seal the belt edges, as described in Specification 819,905, to cause the liquid entering the trough from the ports 20 to pass along the trough under the belt towards the ends of the trough, so that pressure is exerted upwardly on the belt over the whole of its working length, gradually diminishing towards the ends of the trough. Raised ribs 18 of convex section are provided in the base of the trough to reduce friction if the belt should contact the trough bottom. Specification 326,392, [Class 78 (i)], also is referred to.
