A hand operated pallet truck includes lifting forks for carrying a load, wheels 12 for engaging the ground and a handle 13 by which the pallet truck can be pulled or pushed over the ground, the handle being mounted for movement between an upright position and a lowered position in which it is inclined at an angle of less than 45 degrees to the horizontal, and a mechanism connected between the handle and at least one wheel to convert movement of the handle into rotation of said at least one wheel. The mechanism includes a coupling which has a first state representing a first condition of the mechanism in which the handle is not drivingly coupled to said at least one wheel and a second state representing a second condition of the mechanism in which the handle is drivingly coupled to said at least one wheel. The coupling comprises one or more pads (64, figure 5) frictionally engaging the inside of a cylindrical surface (61) concentric with the axis of rotation of said at least one wheel in said second state of the coupling.
