The invention comprises an ester salt, the cation of which contains one or two quaternary ammonium groups, not less than two acryloyloxy or methacryloyloxy groups, and at least one alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms, the acyloxy groups being attached to the N atoms via alkylene bridges, and the alkyl groups being directly attached to N. The preferred ester salts have the formulae <FORM:0823595/IV (b)/1> <FORM:0823595/IV (b)/2> and <FORM:0823595/IV (b)/3> where Y is -R1-O-CO-CR = CH2, R is H or CH3, R1 is an alkylene group, Z and Z1 are C1-3 alkyl groups and A- is a halide or alkyl sulphate ion. The compounds of the invention may be prepared by ester interchange between an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and a polyhydric tertiaryaminoalcohol, followed by quaternation with a C1-3 alkyl ester of an inorganic acid, such as a dialkyl sulphate or an alkyl halide, in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. 2,4-dimethyl-6-tert. butylphenol. Amino alcohols specified are methylamine-NN-diethanol, 1,4-piperazine dimethanol and diethanol, ethylamine NN-diethanol, methylamine NN-dipropanol, triethanolamine, and ethylene diamine NNN1N1-tetraethanol. Examples describe the preparation of (1) N,N1-dimethyl - N,N1 - di(2 - methacryloyloxyethyl) piperazinium di(mono-methyl sulphate); (2) N,N-dimethyl - N,N - di(2 - methacryloyloxyethyl) ammonium monomethyl sulphate; and (3) N - methyl - N,N,N - tri(2 - methacryloyloxyethyl) ammonium monomethyl sulphate.
