PURPOSE: A method for detecting a seabed contact object is provided to automatically detect the seabed contact object by measuring energy of a signal scattered from a seabed and energy of a signal scattered from a contact object. CONSTITUTION: A side scan sonar signal is received(110). Energy of a signal scattered from a seabed is measured in the received signal(210). Energy of a signal scattered from a contact object is measured based on the energy of the signal scattered from the seabed(220). Whether the contact object exists or not is determined by using the energy of the signal scattered from the contact object(240). The contact object is discriminated by analyzing the property of the signal scattered from the contact object when it is determined that the contact object exists.
