<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element having high lifetime of brightness, a planar light source and a display device; and to provide a macromolecular compound that can give these. <P>SOLUTION: The macromolecular compound has a constitutional sequence represented by general formula (1):-[-(Y)<SB POS="POST">n</SB>-Z-]<SB POS="POST">m</SB>- in the main chain thereof, wherein, in the formula, Y represents a bivalent group consisting of the structure represented by general formula (Y-1) or (Y-2) with two hydrogen atoms removed therefrom; Z represents a bivalent group of the structure represented by general formula (Z-1), (Z-2), (Z-3), (Z-4), (Z-5), (Z-6), (Z-7) or (Z-8) with two hydrogen atoms removed therefrom; m denotes an integer of 4-10,000; and n denotes an integer of 1-3.
