<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely perform volume reduction of expanded polystyrene wastes of large volume using simple facilities, thereby enabling subsequent easy treatment of the expanded polystyrene wastes and making a contribution to solve environmental problems. <P>SOLUTION: The wasted expanded polystyrene in an appropriate size is introduced into a volume reduction tank 1 which includes an openable and closable inlet 2 for expanded polystyrene on the upper surface of the tank 1, a recovery tank 5 at the bottom inside the tank through a mesh-like part 4, and an outlet 6 on the upper side surface of the mesh-like part and which also is provided with an injection means of volume reduction liquid in the upper part inside the tank. While the expanded polystyrene is turned into a gel after the inlet 2 is closed, and injection using the volume reduction liquid having a flash point of at least 100°C is performed, the volume reduction liquid is recovered as needed through the mesh-like part 4 and circulated to and used by the injection means in the upper part inside the tank. Once predetermined gelatinization is finished, the inlet is opened and the injection is stopped. The volume-reduced expanded polystyrene in a gel state remained on the mesh-like part is pulled out from the outlet 6, thereby obtaining the volume-reduced expanded polystyrene. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
