The invention provides compositions and methods for enhancing the photostability of avobenzone in compositions for topical administration, including, e.g., sunscreen compositions, by addition of methyl anthranilate in an amount effective to stabilize avobenzone against photodegradation particularly where the composition is substantially free of other non-sunscreen agents that photostabilize avobenzone.
