<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel thickener suitable for use in the cosmetic industry and the pharmaceutical industry. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided a composition which comprises: (a) 80-99 wt.% of at least one anionic polyelectrolyte chosen from branched or crosslinked homopolymers of a monomer possessing a partially or completely salified strong acid functional group or weak acid functional group; (b) 1-20 wt.% of at least one emulsifier of the water-in-oil (W/O) type; and (c) up to 19 wt.% of water.
