<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the efficiency of a discharge lamp lighting device during stable lighting while ensuring an output voltage required for startup, by optimizing the step-up operation of a PFC circuit in the discharge lamp lighting device. <P>SOLUTION: The high voltage discharge lamp lighting device comprises a step-up circuit which steps up an input voltage, a power conditioning circuit which outputs the power being fed from the output of the step-up circuit to a discharge lamp while being conditioned, an AC conversion circuit which performs AC conversion of the output from the power conditioning circuit, a control circuit which controls the power conditioning circuit and the AC conversion circuit, and a detection unit which detects the lighting state of the discharge lamp.
