<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliable detect the inside of an object and the outside of the object of an insertion part in any lighting environment. <P>SOLUTION: An endoscope system where the insertion part 10 is inserted through the insertion port I of the object O to observe the inside of the object includes: an electromagnetic wave radiation unit 12 for radiating electromagnetic wave; an electromagnetic wave detector 14 for detecting the electromagnetic wave; and a determination part 16 for determining whether or not the insertion part 10 is in the object on the basis of a result of detection of the electromagnetic wave detector 14.
