SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING CARBON NANOTUBES

The method for producing carbon nanotubes comprises producing vapours of a catalyst substance inside a reaction chamber, condensing these catalyst substance vapours to form catalyst nanoparticles, and decomposing gaseous hydrocarbons in the presence of the catalyst nanoparticles to produce carbon nanotubes on the surface of the catalyst nanoparticles. The system for producing carbon nanotubes comprises a reactor containing two electrodes, at least one of which is partially fused and contains a catalyst. The reactor is adapted for evaporating the partially fused electrode using an electric arc and for condensing the vapours from said electrode to form catalyst nanoparticles; the electrodes are situated in a reaction chamber for the decomposition of gaseous hydrocarbons in the presence of the catalyst nanoparticles to form nanotubes on the surface of the catalyst nanoparticles.
