A backlight device (2) comprises: a light source section (3) formed from a plurality of light emitting diodes (9) and lenses (10) that extend the light from the light emitting diodes (9); a housing (4) that accommodates this light source section (3); a diffusion plate (5) disposed so as to cover an opening part (6a) in this housing (4); and a reflecting sheet (6) that reflects light irradiated from the light source (3) to the diffusion plate (5) side. The light source section (3) is constituted by arranging and disposing the plurality of light emitting diodes (9) and plurality of lenses (10) in a middle part thereof, and the distribution of luminance of the part corresponding to the light source section (3) as seen from the diffusion plate (5) side has a middle region (C) showing a peak value for the luminance, attenuating regions (D) wherein the luminance gradually attenuates moving toward the left and right ends from this middle region (C), and end regions (E) having a distribution part in which the luminance does not attenuate.
