Class 100(1) A device for feeding a continuous strip of plastic material to the intake opening of an extruder, comprises a reel for carrying the coiled strip, a stand for rotatably supporting the reel, means for properly positioning the reel spaced from the intake opening in a vertical direction, and means for positioning the axis of the reel angularly between a horizontal and vertical position. As shown, plastic strip S is supplied from a reel 18 to an extruding machine 10 having a feed screw 13 for extruding, the plastic material around a wire W. The extruding machine has a strip-feeding mechanism 14 comprising a feed plunger 16. The reel 18 comprises an annular plate 22 connected to a reel support 26 rotatable on a stand 19. A shaft 28 extending from the reel support 26 is rotatably mounted in the stand 19 by means of a sleeve 55 mounted in a ball race 51. The sleeve 55 is secured to the shaft 28 by set screws 56. A circular plate 38 has a depending shaft 39 tightly mounted in a sleeve 36 rotatably carried, by a ball race 32, in a sleeve 30. The plate 38 has a plurality of radially adjustable arms 40 carrying guide rollers 42. One arm 40 carries an arm 44 carrying a roller 46, the arm 44 being adjustable with respect to the arm 40 by set screw 45 engaging a slot in the arm 40. During rotation of the reel 18 the plate 38 and arms 40 remain stationary with respect to the reel 18. Rotation of the reel is controlled by brake shoes 59 acting on a drum 58, the pressure of the shoes being controlled by adjustment of a nut 63 on a bolt 64. A sleeve 49, secured to a seat 50 which receives the ball race 51, is slidably mounted in an outer sleeve 67, but is prevented from rotating relatively thereto by bolts 68. The sleeve 49 may be adjusted relatively axially of the sleeve 67 by unscrewing the bolts so as to position the reel at its correct height. Sleeve 67 is secured to an extension 69 of a disc 70 adjustably secured to a stationary disc 71 by arcuate, slots 74 and nuts 76 on studs 75, thereby permitting adjustment of the inclination of the stand 19. The disc 71 is secured to a base 20 mounted in a dovetailed slide 78 in turn mounted in a dovetailed block 77, thereby permitting adjustment of the stand 19 and reel 18 with respect to the extruding machine 10.
