摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing, at low costs, a substrate for an information recording medium having various physical properties required as applications for a next-generation information recording medium substrate represented by a perpendicular magnetic recording system and the like and especially having high fracture toughness and a smooth surface. <P>SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing a substrate for an information recording medium comprises a process of preparing plate-like crystallized glass containing an SiO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>component, an Al<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O<SB POS="POST">3</SB>component, and an R'<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O component (provided that R' is one or more kinds among Li, Na, and K) and a step of polishing the plate-like crystallized glass. The polishing step only comprises a step of polishing the crystallized glass with a diamond pad.
