<p>A propulsion system (10) for a marine vessel includes a gas turbine (12), a generator (12) receiving rotational power from the gas turbine, an electrical accumulator (14) receiving electrical power from the generator, an electric motor (16) receiving electrical power from the accumulator, a drive shaft (28) receiving rotational power from the electric motor, and a propeller shaft (46) receiving rotational power from the drive shaft. The electric motor (16), drive shaft (28) and propeller shaft (46) are housed in a power train (30,42) that pivots about a generally horizontal axis, relative to the vessel's transom (32). The power train includes a lower unit (42) that houses the propeller shaft (46) and that can pivot in steering directions about the axis of the drive shaft (28), relative to an upper unit (30) that houses the motor (16).</p> |
