A multi-purpose machine-tool comprises first and second rotatable guide - members mounted respectively in a horizontal and a vertical plane on supporting means, with means for fixing each of the guidemembers in a selected angular position, a carrier being supported on each guide-member, one for a tool and the other for a workpiece, and a stub-shaft on each of the guidemembers arranged opposite the carrier and rotatably mounted in a bore formed in the supporting means of the respective guide-member. The base 1 of the machine is provided with two vertical bores which are split and provided with clamping- screws. One bore carries a stub-shaft 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, forming part of a first, horizontal, guidemember 2. A cross-slide 6 is supported on this guide, and may carry a tool-rest for turning- operations, or may support a workpiece for drilling, grinding or milling. The other bore carries a column 3, Figs. 1 and 2, which supports a vertically-adjustable crosshead 4. The latter has a horizontal split bore to take the stub-shaft 5<SP>1</SP> of a second guide-member 5 similar to the guide-member 2, but with its guide-face vertical. A headstock 13 and tailstock 11, Fig. 1, are adjustable along this guide-face. The spindle 22 is driven by an electric motor 10, and is carried by a quill traversed by a hand lever 25. The spindle may carry the work or may be adapted to take a drill, milling-cutter or grinding-wheel. The spindle housing is rotatable in a vertical plane by loosening a nut 14. When rotated to the vertical position shown in Fig. 3, the spindle may be used for drilling, or may be coupled to a spindle 16 to drive, through beltgearing 18, the stub-shaft 2<SP>1</SP> and thus rotate the table 2. The machine may then be used as a turning or boring mill. Taper work may be turned by adjusting the guide 5 in the direction of arrows P<SP>1</SP>.</p> |
