Microporous membranes are produced by forming a foil from an alloy consisting of one or more metals of a first group and at least 40 atomic per cent of one or more metals from a less noble group, and chemically dissolving out one constituent of the alloy by attacking it with a solution to which has been added an oxidation-reduction reagent having a redox potential greater than the dissolution potentials in the alloyed state of the metals of the second group. The redox potential may be less than the dissolution potentials of the metals of the first group, in which case the dissolution is either allowed to go to completion or stopped when sufficient solute has been removed or it may be greater than the said dissolution potentials, when the reaction is stopped after the appropriate amount of the second group metals has been removed. This point may be determined by weighing the membrane or by analysis of the solution. |
