The device (10) has a mailpiece-receiving deck (12) including a longitudinal edge on which a referencing wall (16) is extended. The deck is traversed by a conveyor belt (14) for conveying mailpieces along the wall toward a sloping accumulation surface against which the mailpieces are accumulated. A shock-absorber wedge (30) is arranged at an angle formed by the deck and the wall, and is hit by the mailpieces after the mailpieces are ejected from a mail-handling machine, and before the mailpieces fall back down onto the belt so as to be conveyed toward the surface.
