[Also in Group VIII] Non-blocking film-forming polymer dispersions are prepared from 36Œ2 per cent of butadiene, 30Œ3 per cent of acrylonitrile and 34Œ5 per cent of styrene or a substituted styrene, e.g. α-methyl styrene, vinyl toluene, mono- or dichloro-styrenes. The polymerization may be conducted in aqueous dispersion in the presence of emulsifying agents, e.g. fatty acid soaps such as potassium and sodium oleate, rosin acid soaps including hydrogenated and disproportionated rosin acid soaps, and alkaryl sulphonates, and catalysts, e.g. alkali persulphates such as potassium persulphate, organic peroxides and redox systems comprising iron complexes, polyalkylene polyamines or ferrous gluconate and organic peroxides or hydroperoxides. Modifiers, e.g. alkyl mercaptans with 10 to 18 carbon atoms such as dodecyl and t-dodecyl mercaptan, and diisopropyl xanthogen disulphide may be present and the reaction carried to at least 90 per cent conversion before shortstopping, e.g. with butyl hydroquinone. The polymer dispersions may be stripped of excess monomers, stabilized by adding antioxidants, e.g. phenyl betanaphthylamine, mono- and diheptylated diphenylamine or phenol derivatives, and concentrated by evaporation or creaming. They may be thickened, e.g. by adding sodium polyacrylate, and used for leather treating, paper coating, in water-base paints and as adhesives. |
