A hybrid device of the kind comprising a closed loop of transmission line to which connections are made at four spaced points is provided with a crossover between the conductors of the transmission line in order to reduce the physical distance between two of the connections. The device may be formed from a pair of brass blocks 41 provided with registering channels 43 in their mating surfaces. Supported within the channels are metal rods 14 forming the inner conductors of three coaxial lines of equal length. The fourth side of the loop is formed by a line comprising two conductors 44, 45, each of which is connected at one end to the inner conductor of a coaxial line and at the other to one of the brass blocks. The twoconductor line lies on the axis of a cylindrical cavity 46 formed within the brass blocks. The spacing of wires 44, 45 is of the order of a few thousandths of an inch and is obtained by winding first one of the wires with nylon thread and then winding a second layer of thread over both wires placed together. Input and output connections 1, 2; 3, 4 respectively, are made by means of short coaxial lines running through the brass blocks at right angles to the plane of the ring. The output lines are matched to the loop by means of short-circuited stubs 54, 55. The two outputs are respectively equal to the vector sum and difference of the inputs. A modification (Fig. 1, not shown), is described in which the twoconductor line is of the same length as the coaxial lines and is mounted in a spherical cavity. In this construction the input and output connections lie in the same plane as the loop. In a further modification the transmission line is of the kind comprising an inner conductor disposed between two parallel plane conductors. In the region of the cross-over extended portions of the inner conductor overlap and are connected at their ends each to one of the plane conductors in a similar manner to the conductors 44, 45. |
