Classes 52(i) and 52(ii) [Also in Group XXIX] A hospital bed as described in Specification 683,070 has mounted on the chassis freely castoring. wheels capable of being lowered in relation to the chassis by. means of jacks adapted to be extended or retracted by hydraulic mechanism incorporated in the structure of the chassis. As shown, the castoring wheels comprise a pair 27, 28 positioned as shown and a further wheel 31 positioned below the head of the bed. The wheels are mounted in forked spindles rotatable in sleeves which are carried by pairs of parallel links. One link of each pair is extended beyond its pivot such as 128 and the extension such as 123 is pivoted to the ram of an hydraulic cylinder such as 136 pivoted to the chassis. Each hydraulic cylinder is operated from pumps such as 163 by foot pedal 29, the pumps being mechanically connected so as to operate together the pump cylinders also being interconnected by an equalizing pressure pipe which may pass through the fluid reservoir 25 which serves as a transverse member of the chassis. A lever 32 is also provided to release the pressure. The arrangement is such that on operating the hydraulic cylinders the castoring wheels 27, 28, 31 are lowered whereby the wheel 31 raises the head end of the chassis so that the patient is lifted with his head raised in relation to his body, then the complete chassis is lifted by all three wheels 27, 28, 31 together as soon as the wheels have reached the floor and finally after the hydraulic cylinder of wheel 31 has reached its fully extended position the hydraulic cylinders of the wheels 27, 28 continue until they are fully extended, whereupon the bed is in horizontal position again but is raised in relation to the floor.
