<p>The method comprises processing rod-shaped articles (50) using processing organs (171, 172), cross-axially supporting the article before and after processing, and continuously or intermittently monitoring an operatively free region between a surface of the articles and the processing organ for the presence of interfering particles and/or foreign objects using a field monitoring device (141, 142) formed as a laser light switch. The region between the surface of the articles and the processing organ is monitored in a fan-like manner prior to machining the rod-shaped articles. The method comprises processing rod-shaped articles (50) using processing organs (171, 172), cross-axially supporting the article before and after processing, and continuously or intermittently monitoring an operatively free region between a surface of the articles and the processing organ for the presence of interfering particles and/or foreign objects using a field monitoring device (141, 142) formed as a laser light switch. The region between the surface of the articles and the processing organ is monitored in a fan-like manner: prior to machining the rod-shaped articles, during processing the articles and/or after processing the articles; and with respect to the longitudinal axis of the articles in longitudinally axial direction and/or in transverse axial direction. The articles are arranged in neutral position with respect to the processing organ during processing. The processing organs are formed as laser radiation heads with perforations. A particle shape, a particle size and/or duration of the presence of one particle monitored in the region between the surface of the article and the processing organ is stopped during the manufacturing process as a function of the monitoring device. The processing of the articles using the processing organ is interrupted for a predetermined period of time and/or the production of the articles is stopped depending on the size of the noise particles and/or the size of the foreign body.
