A broaching apparatus (50) includes a first tooth (56) having a front face (56F), a rear face (56R) opposite the front face, and a first cutting surface (56A) having a lobed shape extending along a first side of the first tooth between the front face (56F) and the rear face (56R). A first interface (56-1) defined between the first cutting surface (56A) and the front face (56F) is offset relative to a second interface (56-2) defined between the first cutting surface (56A) and the rear face (56R) in a direction that is substantially perpendicular to an axis (A) of tooth movement for broaching operations to provide tool clearance rearward from the first interface. A method of making a broach cutter is further provided.
