Class 65(2) The pivot head 12 of a stud 10 is formed as a frustum of a convex non-spherical body generated by the rotation of a curved line about the longitudinal axis of the stud, and is encased in bearing halfshells 16, 18 separated by a plane perpendicular to the axis of the stud and secured to an elastomeric bushing 28, 30. Preferably, the radius of curvature of the curved line is greater than its greatest distance from the axis and the plane which separates the half-shells 16, 18, also separates the halves 28, 30 of the bushing and contains the greatest diameter of the head, about which the latter is symmetrical. The bearing half-shells are bonded to the bushing and have end flanges 20, 22, 24, 26 which interlock with the bushing and facilitate the deformation of the latter when the stud tilts relative to the socket 32. A plurality of internal ribs or projections may be formed in the shells to prevent them from binding to the head 12 and to permit lubricant to flow therebetween. To further facilitate deformation of the bushing, spaces 53, 55, and an annular space 46 co-planar with the plane separating the half-shells, are provided to allow the elastomeric material to flow. The elastomeric material may be natural rubber, butadiene-styrene co-polymer, butadiene-acrylenitrile co-polymer, polychloroprene, polysulphide rubber, or mixtures thereof. |
