683,486. Centrifugal machines; mixing appliances. WESTFALIA SEPARATOR AKT.-GES. Feb. 20, 1950 [March 4, 1949], No. 4242/50. Classes 23 and 86 Relates to a centrifuge for continuously separating liquid mixtures flowi n g in countercurrent and comprising at least two liquids of different specific gravities wherein the centrifugal drum of the centrifuge is divided into stages each having at least one stripping disc and channel for each of the liquids. The discs are mounted one above the other on a stationary shaft which is fixed to the casing of the centrifuge and extends beyond the drum and the stripping channels are connected to discharge channels which are disposed in the stationary shaft longitudinally thereof together with the feed channels for the liquids to be treated. Each of the stages I, II, III, of the centrifuge has a distributing plate 6, 7, 8 and a separating disc 9, 10, 11 respectively. The stationary shaft 19 carries stripping discs 12, 13 and 14 for the lighter liquid, such as butyl acetate, and stripping discs 15, 16 and 17 for the heavier liquid, such as a mixture of phenol and water. The heavy and light liquids are supplied through channels 29, 25 and after mixing during their passage through the centrifuge, wherein the phenol is absorbed by the butyl acetate, are discharged through channels 18, 31 respectively. A manually operable valve 20-24 controls the flow through the discs 15, 16 and 17. The lighter liquid may be fed to the upper or underside of the disc or direct to the channel thereof. Specification 683,489 is referred to.
