A conveyor system 300 comprising a conveyor belt 302 having a plurality of conveyor belt rollers arranged to rotate on fixed axes aligned in a direction of belt travel 306, a carryway pan 314 underlying the conveyor belt 302 and having a plurality of openings 316, a plurality of cartridges 320 rotatably supported in the openings 316, with each cartridge 320 including a freely rotatable drive roller retained in position to engage the conveyor belt rollers from below the conveyor belt 302 and a cartridge gear disposed below the carryway pan 314, an array of actuator gears positioned to engage the cartridge gears, and an actuator coupled to the array of actuator gears to actuate the gears to rotate the cartridges 320 and change the angle of engagement between the drive rollers and the conveyor belt rollers.
