APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DISCRIMINATING TYPE OF OPTICAL DISC

PURPOSE: A device for distinguishing the type of an optical disk and a method thereof are provided to accurately distinguish the type of an optical disk even though instantaneous noise occurs. CONSTITUTION: A detecting unit(16) detects an S-curve of a focus error signal during a focus swing operation. The detecting unit calculates the size of the detected S-curve. The detecting unit integrates the sizes of (+) and (-) directions of the S-curve around a DC level of the focus error signal. The detecting unit adds up absolute values. The detecting unit counts the number of valid S-curves whose sizes are larger than a set reference size. A control unit(15) distinguishes the type of the optical disk according to the number of counted S-curves.
