The method involves determining a non-stoichiometric mode of operation of an internal combustion engine (14) and short-term loading of the internal combustion engine with a fuel or air mixture with stoichiometric composition. An additive-portion is measured during a short-term stoichiometric loading and the provided non-stoichiometric mode of operation of the internal combustion engine is reproduced. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control unit for determining an additive portion, particular ethanol content, in a fuel mixture for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle; (2) a computer program product with program code unit for storing program on a computer readable data carrier; and (3) a signal sequence with computer-readable instructions for executing a additive portion determining method.
