PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an exterior device to easily identify the operational state of recording sections of a recording device with a plurality of recording sections and events that have occurred in recording sections.

SOLUTION: A recording system 1 includes: a printer 3 having a plurality of first recording units 40 and second recording units 50; and a host computer 2 connected to the printer 3. The printer 3 detects change in the status of each recording unit and transmits a status indication showing the status of each recording unit and an off-line factor indication showing an off-line factor that caused the change in status, and an off-line cause indication specifying no recording unit through an interface section 38. The host computer 2 identifies the cause of off-line occurring in a recording unit based on the status indication and the off-line cause indication received, and status indications and off-line cause indication that have been previously received.
