<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide polypeptides, polysaccharide-polypeptide conjugates, and expression vectors for treating or preventing pneumococcal infection. <P>SOLUTION: The invention relates to a nucleotide containing a nucleic acid encoding a Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumolysin polypeptide or antigenic fragment thereof in the production of a medicament which elicits an immune response to a Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumolysin. When compositions are administered to a mammal, an anti-pneumococcal immune response is induced.
