<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably align paper sheets without causing wrinkles nor creases in a direction vertical to a conveying direction. <P>SOLUTION: The paper sheet placed between two entrance-side rollers facing each other is held between two conveying belts which are wound between the entrance-side roller and an exit-side roller, and conveyed. A rotatable deflection roller is provided between the entrance-side roller and the exit-side roller, and the deflection roller is rotated corresponding to the alignment amount of bills. The deflection roller is arranged so that the outer circumferential surface pushes up the conveying belts holding the bills therebetween. Accordingly, the state of the conveying belts is changed by the rotation movement of the deflection roller, and the conveyed bills are moved in the direction vertical to the conveying direction.
