摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus adjustment device and method for accurately adjusting a focal point even if there is a point light source object, without increasing the time required for focus adjustment operation. <P>SOLUTION: Focal position detecting means 14 and 15 detect a focal point from an image signal generated by an imaging element 5, while driving focus adjusting means 3 for adjusting a focal point of an object image which is formed by the imaging element 5 that photoelectrically converts the object image formed by an imaging optical system to obtain an electrical image signal. The maximum value and an integrated value of luminance signals in drive positions of the focus adjustment means 3 is used, the signals being obtained from the image signal generated by the imaging element, to determine whether there is a point light source objet in a region of the imaging element for obtaining an image signal in order to detect the focal position.
