METHOD FOR PREPARING MONOMER AND POLYMER THEREOF

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing acrylamide or acrylic acid (salt) of high purity from acrylonitrile of low quality containing a high level of acrolein.

SOLUTION: This process is for preparing an ethylenically unsaturated amide or an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or salt thereof from the corresponding ethylenically unsaturated nitrile, wherein the nitrile is subjected to a hydration or hydrolysis reaction in an aqueous medium in the presence of a biocatalyst (microorganisms of the genus Rhodococcus), and contains at least 2 ppm acrolein, and amide or carboxylic acid or salt thereof contains less than 2 ppm acrolein.
