<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly efficient intra-prediction mode information encoding/decoding by reducing the amount of codes for mode identification. <P>SOLUTION: An input image is divided into blocks to be processed, and an in-screen prediction mode of a block to be processed is determined in units of the blocks to be processed thus divided. A determination is made whether or not the blocks on the periphery of the block to be processed can be referred to, and a prediction mode thus determined is encoded based on the results of the determination. The image encoder comprises entropy decoding means for extracting the encoded prediction mode of the block to be processed by entropy decoding the input encoded data, determination means for determining whether or not the blocks on the periphery of the block to be processed can be referred to, and means for decoding the prediction mode based on the results from the determination means. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
