The method involves supporting hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements (10) by rocker arms (6) for valve operation, where the compensation elements are associated with an individual internal combustion engine. Dropping times of the compensation elements are measured. The compensation elements having equal dropping times corresponding to valves of an individual motor are selected and constructed, from amount of the compensation elements for which the dropping times are measured.
