<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating device and a display device that can achieve a high level of luminance in a scanning system. <P>SOLUTION: An illuminating device comprises a pair of transparent substrates arranged separate from and opposing each other, a light source arranged on a flank of one of the paired transparent substrates, electrodes disposed on the surface of both of the paired transparent substrates, and a light modulation layer disposed in the gap between the paired transparent substrates; as the electrode, a plurality of partial electrodes are arrayed in a direction orthogonal to the light incidence face on which light from the light source comes incident; the light modulation layer is so formed as to be wholly or partially dispersive or transparent relative to the light from the light source, depending on the magnitudes and directions of electric fields created by the electrodes; and a drive circuit so scans the dispersive part of the light modulation layer in a direction orthogonal to the light incidence face by sequentially driving the plurality of partial electrodes in each prescribed unit. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
