A device (100) for detecting the position of a gearshift lever and/or selector lever (1) for a transmission has a signal-generating element (2.1; 2.2) that can be moved together with the gearshift lever and/or selector lever (1). The sensor element (3, 4) delivers, as the measured value, an analog signal (S1, S2) that is dependent on the plus-minus sign. A shifting device (200) for a transmission, especially for use in a motor vehicle, may include the device (100) for detecting the position of a gearshift lever and/or selector lever (1).
