<p>Conversion from an image signal to a subfield code in an image display device is computed without using a conversion table. To this end, the image display device has an acceptable noise calculation unit, a red image signal processor, a green image signal processor, and a blue image signal processor. The acceptable noise calculation unit calculates the difference in the image signal for each color between pixels adjacent in the direction in which a data electrode extends, calculates a brightness difference level, and calculates an acceptable noise level for brightness on the basis of the brightness difference level. The red image signal processor: calculates a red threshold from the acceptable noise level for brightness and a red brightness conversion coefficient; and generates a red display code by using a subfield code for forbidding a subfield having a smaller gradient weight than the red threshold from becoming non-emitting. The green image signal processor and the blue image signal processor have the same configuration as that of the red image signal processor.</p> |
