In apparatus for making a combustible gas from fluid hydrocarbons and steam by a cyclic catalytic process there is arranged at the top of the gas-making chamber 2 a combustion chamber 8 which is towards the end of a heating period and after the upward supply of air for burning off deposited carbon has been discontinued produces hot combustion gases to pass downwardly through the bed of catalyst 16 to raise the temperature of the bed to the desired level. In the first part of the heating period heating by burning deposited carbon may be supplemented by hot combustion gases from a combustion chamber 7 and additional air may be added at the top of the gas-making chamber 2 at 14 as described in Specification 850,362. The combustion chamber 8 has a burner 10 supplied with fuel oil and air through inlets 11 and 12, the oil being atomized by steam supplied through an inlet 13. Steam and/or recycled waste gases may be added to the chamber 8 through line 14 to adjust the temperature of the combustion gases.</p> |
