A rotor, especially for extracting energy from a tidal flow, comprising at least one blade 2 arranged to rotate about an axis of rotation 4 and being formed by a surface extending between inner and outer conic helixes 5, 6, each having a pitch that decreases as the radius of the helix increases. The blades may be enclosed between an inner surface 6 and an outer rim 1 with the blade(s) mounted on the inner surface and/or the outer rim. An opening at the smaller diameter end may be arranged for axial flow of the fluid and an opening at the larger diameter end arranged to allow flow with a radial component. Two of the rotors may be combined such that their larger diameter ends oppose each other such that fluid exiting the large diameter end of one rotor enters the larger diameter end of the other rotor, preferably with the rotors contra-rotating about a single axis (Figs. 8-11).
