The electrolyte of a deferred-action battery is contained in a collapsible reservoir 17 closed by a frangible diaphragm 19 situated above a manifold 12 leading through openings 13 to the battery cells. The diaphragm is ruptured by a knife 20 when the cells are to be filled. The knife is enclosed in the reservoir and is attached to a rod 25 carrying a piston 24 which when forced downwards causes the knife to rupture the diaphragm and to be withdrawn into a recess 31 in the battery casing. If the battery is not evacuated of air before activation chambers 14, 15 are provided connected to the cells through openings 16 to receive the air displaced by the electrolyte. When the battery is to be activated the piston 24 is forced downwards by gas pressure from an electricallyoperated squib 26, and the reservoir 17 is collapsed by gas pressure from a squib 38. As the diaphragm 19 must be ruptured before the reservoir is collapsed, the squib 26 is fired before the squib 38. In an alternative method of operation the casing 36 and squib 38 are omitted, and the battery cells are stored under vacuum, the reservoir 17 collapsing under atmospheric pressure when the diaphragm 19 is ruptured. The chambers 14, 15 may then be dispensed with. |
