A method, apparatus and computer program product for providing scalable storage virtualization is disclosed. Storage virtualization management functions are provided in a first device (52) and storage virtualization Input/Output (I/O) functions are provided in at least one second device (54). An interface is provided between the first device and the second device, wherein the first device manages and updates I/O functions of the second device. I/O operations are performed between the second device and at least one storage device (18). In operation the first device maintains and distributes metadata tables to the second device. These are transferred to the second device via the interface preferably using a message based communications protocol. The transfer updates the I/O functions of the second device. The interface to the second device may be an advanced technology attachment (ATA) over Ethernet (AoE) protocol. The management functions performed by the first device may include snooping incoming I/O requests.
