PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image signal processing unit, or the like capable of more appropriately performing gradation conversion processing to an image signal according to the dynamic range of an object. SOLUTION: The image signal processing unit has: an extraction section 109 for extracting a plurality of local regions from a group of images of which the obtained amount of exposure is different; an estimation section 110 for estimating the size of the luminance range of the object from the extracted local region; a selection section 112 for selecting an image signal to be processed from the group of images; a gradation conversion characteristic calculation section 113 for calculating gradation conversion characteristics from the pixel value of the image signal to be processed; a correction section 114 for correcting the gradation conversion characteristics so that the gradation conversion characteristics become closer to those calculated by the gradation conversion characteristic calculation section when the estimated luminance range of the object is relatively small than when the estimated luminance range of the object is relatively large; and a gradation conversion section 115 for performing gradation conversion of an image signal to be processed by the corrected gradation conversion characteristics.
